All-new 2016 Toyota Tacoma juggles home projects and kid duty

The Toyota Tacoma’s history dates back to 1968, when the automaker launched a compact pickup called the Hilux. Toyota renamed the model the Tacoma when the seventh generation model, now considerably larger, debuted in 1995.

Pickups today aren’t as simple as when they were the purview of construction workers and car mechanics. New models must be as adept at hauling the kids to weekend soccer games as they are at carrying lumber.

The 2016 Tacoma rises to the challenge with a roomier interior, increased engine power, better fuel economy, and enhanced on- and off-road performance. Models range from the family friendly Limited Double Cab I tested to a TRD Off-Road version capable of scaling a 40-degree sheer rock face. An available crawl-control feature maintains a steady speed when ascending or descending extreme grades.

The test truck’s 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with variable valve timing improves fuel efficiency and reduces toxic emissions. A 6-speed automatic transmission comes standard on the Limited. The driver uses a rotary knob on the instrument panel to shift between two- and four-wheel drive. A 2-speed transfer case on the four-wheel drive model adds an extreme low gear range for maintaining traction when one or more wheels are off the ground.

Features on the Limited grade include Entune infotainment with app suites, keyless start, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth interface, and a power moonroof. The double cab provides comfortable seating for four adult passengers and more interior storage space.

With its combination of “living room on wheels” comfort and all-terrain capability, the new Toyota Tacoma is a great option for today’s active families.
