Keeping Everyone Safe On The Road

AAA Mid States

As the temperatures start to rise and families prepare for spring road trips and summer vacations, let AAA help keep you protected on the road ahead.

As you’ll read in the following pages, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a few reports in January that focused on keeping our roads safe. One of those reports evaluated protecting roadside workers, specifically how those workers notify you, the oncoming traffic, of their work, through signage, flares and more.

With Move Over laws in place across the nation, AAA is committed to raising awareness about the importance of giving space for those workers, or other motorists, by changing lanes when possible.

The world is evolving with new technologies that are in our vehicles and how to navigate these possible distractions safely is an important step for everyone.

Another study released earlier this year focused on in-vehicle technology usage among older drivers. The findings suggest that participants in the research tended to use in-vehicle technologies that alert them of unsafe driving situations like blind-spot or forward collision warnings more than those which enhance functionality like navigation or phone technologies. Overall, AAA continues to monitor the ever-changing technologies that are becoming more prevalent in our vehicles, and I recommend reading the entire study on our website.

Later in this issue, you also will read about actions that are recommended for families to help keep everyone safe, whether you are preparing for a new driver or reinforcing the importance of smart, safe-driving techniques to younger drivers.

As spring approaches, more drivers are hitting the road and more new drivers are learning the safety of our roadways. AAA offers safety information on our website for teenage drivers and parents that are getting ready to hand over the keys for the first time. You’ll find a wealth of knowledge on our site, including how to create a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement and the importance of this contract. Understanding the facts and risks and preparing for them can be a daunting task. Allow the experts at AAA to help guide your family through this transition.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a valuable resource and I encourage all our members to learn more by visiting aaafoundation.org. Together, we can keep our roadways safe this spring and beyond
