The Lexus’ newest compact crossover combines the safety and reliability the brand is known for with edgy styling that is a radical departure from conservative predecessors.

The NX comes in three trim levels: 200t, 200t F Sport (tested here), and 300h. The exterior features a dramatic spindle grille framed by LED daytime running lamps, an aero profile, and sharply raked tailgate. Inside, two-tone upholstery inspired by contemporary furniture contrasts with metallic or wood accents. The F Sport model adds a blacked-out grille, special wheels, and badging.

Although it’s not a perfect car, the NX’s charisma is undeniable, making it a standout entry in a segment that also includes the BMW X3, Audi Q3, and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Lexus’ first turbocharged engine delivers 258 foot-pounds of peak torque at the tip of the throttle for excellent low-end power. A new 6-speed automatic transmission adds an extra overdrive gear to enhance gas mileage.

Drive Mode Select varies suspension damping from sport to comfort, depending on the driver’s needs. For example, for cruising around town, drivers will want to use the normal or comfort mode, but for higher speeds, the sport or firmer mode will keep the car level when driving around corners. The electric power-steering system is an improvement over earlier efforts but still lacks the on-center response of the car’s German competitors.

The versatile interior seats five passengers. A touchpad infotainment control called Enform eliminates a clutter of buttons on the center stack. The newest version of Enform includes post-crash notification, turn-by-turn directions, and new apps. Smartphone owners will appreciate Qi wireless charging, which allows you to charge your phone without a cord.

With its dramatic styling and the performance to back it up, the compact Lexus NX should have no problem winning hearts stateside.
