2016 Lexus RX 350

The 2016 Lexus RX 350 gets an inside-outside makeover

The Lexus RX was the first midsize luxury crossover to market in 1999. Today, it remains one of the most popular models in the segment with annual sales exceeding 100,000 units. The all-new 2016 RX is dramatically restyled with some important changes under the hood.

Both gasoline and hybrid versions come with front- or all-wheel drive. And for the first time, hybrid offerings include the performance-oriented F Sport (tested here in all-wheel drive). Under the hood, the gasoline models boast a 295-horsepower, V-6 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission that extends mileage.

The RX exterior promises to turn heads with its aggressive spindle grille, chiseled back end, and aerodynamic profile infused with multiple character lines.

The F Sport’s steering response is noticeably crisper as compared with other RX models and the suspension tuning is sportier. The standard-drive mode select allows drivers to modify throttle response for better mileage (eco mode) or harder acceleration (sport mode). The all-wheel drive system can send up to 50 percent of engine power to the rear wheels in order to maintain traction.

Standard safety features for the RX include antilock braking, stability control, 10 airbags, Lexus Enform with emergency response, daytime running lamps, and tire-pressure monitoring. The optional Lexus Safety System + integrates pre-collision warning with auto-stop and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, radar adaptive cruise control capable of bringing the car to a full stop, and intelligent high beams that automatically dim when they sense a car coming in the opposite direction.

The interior’s lush upholstery and trims are reminiscent of high-end furniture. An available Mark Levinson audio system mimics symphony halls in sound quality. I like the available heads-up display that includes posted speed limits, adaptive cruise control settings, and navigation information. The new RX is 4.7-inches longer than the model it replaces, adding space in the second row and cargo area.

All in all, there’s much to love about the new RX. It’s easy to understand why you’ll continue to see this model almost everywhere you go.
