The days leading up to Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day are the busiest travel weeks of the year, which means airports and flights are more crowded and waits can be longer. Take note of these eight travel tips to keep your spirit jolly during all the holiday hustle and bustle.

1. Book direct flights. Connecting flights leave less room for layovers and delays since there aren’t as many transitions between airports and gates. When possible, always select a direct flight over one with one or more connections.

2. Prepare for weather delays. If you’re traveling to and from areas where snowfall is common, be patient. Flights originating or connecting in snowy areas can be grounded or delayed until flight conditions are safe.

3. Consider traveling on the actual holiday. The idea of spending a holiday on a plane instead of with friends and family may not sound appealing, but the ticket price might change your mind. It’s significantly less money to travel on an actual holiday than days surrounding it — plus, some airlines (like Southwest) will give you a complimentary treat!

4. Give yourself extra time. Get to the airport one to two hours earlier than you normally would. During the holidays, you’ll want to ensure you have plenty of time to get through increased road traffic and longer-than-usual airport lines.

5. Pack for the weather. Make sure you pack clothes suitable for the climate you’re heading to, keeping in mind any activities, such as skiing, that require special clothing and gear.

6. Don’t wrap presents. Although you might think it would save you time to wrap any gifts you’re bringing on the plane, airport security often will unwrap gifts to check them. And then, you’ll have to wrap them yet again upon reaching your destination.

7. Carry on your coat. If you’re traveling to a colder destination, make sure you have your coat on the plane with you so you’re comfortable when you land. Carrying your coat with you also will save you room and decrease the weight of your checked luggage.

8. Reserve parking and rent cars in advance. When it comes to the holidays, it pays to be a planner. This time of year airport parking lots sell out, so if you plan to drive and park at the airport, reserve your spot in advance (AAA members get a discount at The Parking Spot!). And if you need a rental car when you reach your destination, be sure to reserve it well ahead of time to avoid price increases, or worse, no availability.

The bottom line: Pack your patience, as the holidays are a busy time, so you might as well enjoy the ride!
