Three Tips for Simplifying Holiday Air Travel

Traveling throughout the holiday season guarantees an increase in travelers, busier airports, and longer lines at security checkpoints. Here are answers to three key questions that can simplify air travel this season.

1. How can I make my airport experience easier this season?
The most important tip for air travel, any time of year, is to arrive early. Check the airport’s website in advance to view terminal maps (also helpful for knowing where you can grab a bite to eat during a layover), early check-in options, recommended arrival times, delays or cancelations, and weather conditions.

2. How should I transport holiday gifts and food items?
It’s important to keep in mind that the same guidelines apply to these items year-round. The 3.4-ounce liquid limitation applies to food and gifts in carry-on luggage, and includes snow globes, perfume and cologne, and gift baskets. Pies and cakes are allowed through security checkpoints, but are subject to additional screening. And resist the urge to gift wrap items until you reach your final destination, as you may be required to unwrap them during the security screening process.

3. What do I need to know before going through a security checkpoint?
While the Transportation Security Administration has implemented imaging technology for security screenings, passengers still have the option of electing a pat-down procedure. Passengers may also request a private screening or a chair to sit in, if necessary. Children 12 and younger and adults 75 and older are eligible for a modified security screening, which permits them to leave on shoes and a light jacket during this process. Strollers and car seats are subject to scanning.
